Tom's Dahlia

A$15.00
Sold out

The Tom’s Dahlia is a classic bright red beauty, but it’s most special because of its sentimental lineage and history.

I first sent a tuber of this dahlia from my Brisbane garden up to my dear friend Catherine in Toowoomba. She grew it for a season and because we didn’t have a name for this variety, she kindly called it the Tom’s Dahlia in honour of my brother Tom.

It is one of the few dahlias that grow tall with lots of flowers, but do not need to be held up by stakes because they have extremely strong stems. A fitting name for my brother.

Catherine then kept the kindness going by sending a tuber of the Tom’s Dahlia from her garden down to my brother Fergus in Sydney.

Fergus took the baton and grew the Tom’s Dahlia the last two years, expanding to grow multiple plants from the original tuber until his garden was a sea of stunning red Tom’s Dahlias.

Over the weekend, Fergus and I dug up the tubers of Tom’s Dahlia and found hundreds of them all viable and all ready to grow for this season.

We would love to see the kindness sent around from the original Tom’s Dahlia tuber carry on and continue to grow throughout Australia. So, if a bright red dahlia is calling to you, then the Tom’s Dahlia would love to come to your garden.
