Grow Veggie Seedlings In A Few Simple Steps

Where I grow my veggie seedlings: on a waterproof table on my Brisbane balcony!

If you have ever dreamed of growing your own veggie patch with rows of lettuce and tomatoes, the reality isn't actually that far out of reach…if you grow your own veggie seedlings. I recently did a seedling project where I grew over 100 veggie seedlings to plant at home. The process was surprisingly simple and surprisingly inexpensive.

I highly recommend growing veggie seedlings at home and I’ve had really good success with tomato, lettuce, basil and rocket to name a few. I’ve included the simple steps I followed to grow the trays of veggie seedlings and give myself access to weeks’ worth of organic produce-to-be. By the way, each tray of seedlings cost about $10 when you include the tray, potting mix and seeds. Not bad at all!

When I grow veggie seedlings, I go all out! Here are rocket seedlings, tomato, basil and lettuce seedlings (above) all grown at home

How To Grow Veggie Seedlings | 5 Tips

  1. Fill up a seedling tray with potting mix (I use REKO trays and Searles potting mix)

  2. Put a hole in each square and then pop one veggie seed in each square (1 only, trust me!)

  3. Pat down, sprinkle lightly with water from a watering can (I use Nylex) and put into direct sunlight

  4. A week later seedlings should have popped up

  5. I keep the seedlings in the tray for a whole month to let them get to a good size before planting them in a garden bed or pots
