Dahlias are a heat-loving plant, so if you have been wondering when to plant dahlias in Australia, the simple answer is in summer, from December 1 onwards.

However, because many parts of Australia hit summer temperatures well before December, you can safely plant your dahlias earlier than that. For example, in Brisbane, I usually plant my dahlia tubers in September and the flowers arrive around December, with another flush of flowers in March and April. For people in similar climates to Brisbane I would start anytime from September onwards.

When To Plant Dahlias In Australia | Tasmania + Cooler Climates

If you live somewhere in Australia with a cooler climate or cooler winter such as Canberra, Tasmania and southern parts of Western Australia, I would suggest holding off planting your dahlia tubers until at least November when it warms up enough.

And the good news is that you can keep planting while it’s warm, I would say right up to January in February in warmer climates, giving you quite a long runway to get tubers into the ground and flowers in your hands a few months later.
