What are the best vegetables to grow in Brisbane? My favourites are below
Tatsoi, Kang Kong, radicchio ….these were all names of veggies I’d never even heard of 10 years ago, let alone thought I could possibly grow myself one day from seed.
Fast forward a number of years and plenty of experimenting and I have grown heaps of delicious veggies in my backyard in Brisbane (and in pots as well). One year I even set myself the challenge of growing 10 different types of heirloom tomatoes from seed (not easy!).
There are so many veggies, so little time, but I have put together a list of what I consider to be the best vegetables to grow in Brisbane. In a nutshell, any veggie that likes warm weather is a pretty good veggie to grow in Brisbane. Here are 12 of the best veggies to grow in Brisbane, and when to plant them, below!
January is boiling in Brisbane, but rocket can handle it - and tastes delicious
February is a good time to plant basil, a herb that thrives in warm weather

April is a great time to plant delicious broccoli that lives for cooler weather
May is the perfect time to plant carrots in Brisbane, they grow over winter and arrive in spring
In June I plant nutritious green Tatsoi, on the right here
One of the best vegetables to plant in Brisbane each July is spinach, it grows well in pots too
It’s not quite spring, but I plant spring onions in August
September is a good time to plant lots of lettuce, I usually grow my own lettuce seedlings
Stick with leafy greens like rainbow chard in October
As it heats up in Brisbane in November, it’s a good time to plant hardy bush beans
Not exactly a vegetable, but orange marigolds go well in December heat and make a great addition to summer salads
